If you're an avid fisher, chances are you either own a boat or share in the maintenance of a fellow fisherman's boat. Most know that owning a boat comes with a significant amount of responsibility and maintenance. There are pre-fishing preparations and post-fishing tasks that must always be done. It only makes sense then, that your boat trailer will also require some love at some point.
Inspect
Make sure to inspect all parts of your boat trailer to make sure you don't miss anything in the process. One little issue can become much more in the future. Make sure you inspect the following:
By checking all of these things, you can make sure you have no issues along the road that you are not ready to deal with. All of these things are important and should not be looked at lightly when it comes to the proper maintenance of your boat trailer.
You will also want to check your led lights to make sure no water leaks are coming from them. This could be a bad sign and should be taken care of as fast as possible. Make sure you use wire wrap on your wires to protect them from the elements, so you don't have any future wiring problems. Also, check your plugs and make sure there is no wear and tear within them. If you feel like they need a cleaning, use a cotton swab to clean them up, it works great.
Spray Trailer Bunk
You are going to want to do this to prevent mildew and other things from attaching to your trailer a lot of the time. It also helps the boat slide on and off of the trailer with ease. The best way to do this is with a silicone spray, and it is relatively cheap as well.
Coat Crossmembers
Flex type coating is excellent for protection and will help lock in the color for a very long time. This is recommended to keep a longer life span of your boat trailer.
Bearings
This is an important thing to remember to keep things rolling to the water. You must make sure the bearings are suitable. So make sure that you both pack and grease them, at least every once in a while, to keep it ready for use. You should also check your tires for wear and tear and make sure your tire pressure is at a reasonable level for traveling. Check your spare tire for the same, just in case there are any issues. Also, carry a can of fix a flat in your towing vehicle because you never know what may happen.
Maintaining your boat trailer is cheap and worthwhile and should be done at least once a month, depending on your ambition level. Just remember the things above, and you should be good to go.
