Surviving A Storm When Boating

Even with the right equipment in the water and the necessary experience, you can never have 100% water safety certainty. For those who are passionate and enjoy water activities such as boating, storms can be common, so knowing some basic tips to help in surviving a storm when boating is very necessary. You should always plan responsibly for the best way to survive in case of a storm.

Getting a full prediction of the water condition for the entire time while boating, in most cases, isn’t always accurate. You can get into the water with the right weather conditions only for a storm to start from nowhere so there is always the need to remain prepared.

The high level of risk that storms can cause while boating can make it a struggle between life and death. The boat is subjected to the risk of damage if a storm gets out of control. Inability to survive when the storm arises could mean loss of life or total damage to your boat which can end your boating passion instantly. Below are some of the ways that will help you in surviving a storm when boating.

1. Always Be Prepared
Before hitting the water with your boat, always make sure all parts and mechanics are in the best condition and running properly through careful maintenance and be equipped with the right supplies and technology to engage a storm just in case. Practice with your boat and get perfect on using the gears in order to be adequately prepared. It’s of little value to have the gears and all the safety measures yet be unable to use them during the storm.

2. Pass The Right Skills To Your Crew
When heading for any boating activity with your crew, always make sure they are equally prepared for the storm survival. This will help manage any storm condition should the storm extend and overcome the individual effort since the crew can come in and support. Boating with a crew that you trust is always something to consider as you can participate in storm survival training classes together or train them with the experience that you already have.

3. Understand The Weather
When the chances of experiencing a storm are very high, you can survive by avoiding direct confrontation and cancelling any boating activity or wait for the water to get calm. You can achieve a better understanding of weather by closely following weather reports especially in your target areas.

4. Alternative Ports Or Safe Land
When a storm comes and finds you in deep water, getting back to your origin for safety can sometimes be risky. Having a better understanding of your location and the existing alternative ports or where you can seek safety in case of a storm will offer better survival technique.

5. Always Communicate
To enhance your safety and that of your crew, communication is very key when boating. Every member of the crew must have the same understanding of the storm counter plan and strategy that has been set with the respective roles and ability to execute them. Ability to communicate at the right time and in an effective way certainly helps to ensure maximum safety.
